Studio Apartment also known as one room kitchen aka 1RK, which typically consist of one large room which serves as the living, dining, and bedroom. Kitchen facilities may either be located in the central room, or in a small separate room, and the bathroom is usually in its own smaller room. They are also known as single-room dwelling places or studio flats. BUA ranges from 200 Sft to 450 Sft.

Traditionally in the past, middle class nuclear families stayed in 1RK apartments. These 1RK apartments featured a hall with a bedroom, bathroom and attached kitchen. Even today in many of the slum redevelopment schemes, flats handed over to existing tenants are 1RK in nature.

Challenge in studio apartments is to provide all the basic amenities with a constraint of a limited space.

Due to rising cost of hotels in metro cities, tourists who wish to stay for a longer duration, prefer to stay in studio apartments. This has been aptly noted at travel portals like Airbnb.
